Evacuation Day: Conveniently held on St. Patrick's Day, this commemorates the day the British left Boston. Actually officially celebrated only in Suffolk County (Boston plus three small towns), and there only by city and state workers, who get the day off, causing grief for people trying to, say, renew their license or pay a parking ticket. --- From

Hey look! It's Saint Patrick's day today! There're four leaf clovers all over the place!

And yet... you're not the lucky one today.

Some of the lucky ones, they finished up their work yesterday, hopped on a plane, and will be back from Hawaii in a week.

Others of the other lucky ones, they're leaving tonight, after spending today watching parades and hanging out in bars. They'll be coming back from the Virgin Islands a day or two late, too.

You, on the other hand, are one of the unlucky ones. Even as you read this, you are working frantically to finish the last problem set, the last page of a paper, the last bit of wiring, coding, layout, configuring, brain-dumping -- all that stuff that that you absolutely, positively, must have done by 5pm Friday.

Friday, for those of you who haven't slept yet this week, is today -- and, in fact, 5pm is mere minutes away.

You, poor unlucky bastard that you are, you haven't even begun to think about what you're doing for Spring Break. You have a vague idea that if you get on the web at 5:15, when everything that's done is done, and everything that isn't is dead anyhow, that maybe you can find some cheap vacation package.

Frankly, you're delusional from lack of sleep. It's Spring Break weekend, fer crying out loud. The cheap vacation packages are *gone*.

Be realistic. For what you've got in spare cash, you can take a vacation to Framingham... if you hitchhike. You're going to be in the lab over Spring Break, working away like the indentured servant that you are.

Just like me.

But there is still hope for us poor souls: if we band together, we can have riotous fun right here. We can paint Cambridge red, and the lab blue. (Hey, you with the vacation plans, quit laughing at me.)

We just have to work together. And that's why we'll be planning our emergency Spring Break strategy at tonight's very special Evacuation Day....

P.S. Anyone showing up to GSB with an actual vacation plan would be well advised not to mock the rest of us.
