Dear Colleagues:

A great many of you recently received email with the subject heading "A Universal Artifical Intelligence". If you'll recall, the email claimed to be from a construction worker named Wilson Holland who had discovered the secret to AI.

I must apologize to all of you for the spam. There is, of course, no construction worker named Wilson Holland. There is only a shell script I wrote on a lark. You see, on a dare I attempted to port an AI system from Lisp to csh. Unfortunately, when I fired "Wilson" up, it was just smart enough to sign up for an AOL account and start spamming out Markov-chain-generated AI-babble.

Although I thought I had killed "Wilson" after his first round of spam-email, it turned out I had only suspended him, and when I accidentally foregrounded him you got the more recent spamming. This time I used kill -HUP; however, I am a little worried that "Wilson" may have uploaded himself to an AOL mainframe in the form of a VBscript virus, so if you get additional email from "him", please just delete it as soon as possible.

Please join me for a discussion of the merits of different shells and scripting languages as a foundation for AI at tonight's...
