As the lab members whose duty it is to inform you that GSB goes on, yet
again, this Friday at 530 pm in G9 lobby, during a time of unprecedented
mailing-list crises, we'd like to take this opportunity to suggest the
GSB-csail mailing list solution. Do not worry, Help is On the Way! Also
we'd like to thank the various CSAIL community members for recognizing our
proud beer-drinking tradition by canonizing our messages as appropriate
mailing-list traffic. And, I suppose a measure of congratulations is in
order, because all of you seem to have figured out that the Girl Scout
Benefit actually serves BEER, even though we've never actually mentioned
BEER in our weekly announcements. It's true. We have BEER. BEER for 1.50$
each. BEER open to all community members: staff, faculty, students,
friends, alumns, and 21+ UROPS are all welcome to swing by and DRINK A BEER,
which contains ALCOHOL, and may cause TIPSINESS and INTOXICATION, and
CONSUMING ALCOHOL MAY IMPARE YOUR ABILITY TO OPERATE HEAVY MACHINERY.
And now the GSB list proposal. Clearly there are a number of concerns that
dictate which list a hypothetical message should be sent to, and remembering
which is which is a confusing and difficult task requiring social judgment
and tact, so until the AI divisions of the lab can figure out a way to
automate this decision, we propose the following:
First each message should automatically be sent to a new mailing list,
dynamically created. The list could be called "csail-<body>@csail.mit.edu"
where <body> is the body of the message.
Second, each lab member would be automatically enrolled in this list, so
that each person will be able to decide whether or not to participate in
each discussion on a per-message basis. Lab members wishing to be removed
from a particular discussion can, of course, remove themselves by following
this link:
http://lists.csail.mit.edu/mailman/options/general-discuss/LISTNAME/USERNAME
%40csail.mit.edu/PASSWORD/SSN/BANKROUTINGNUMBER where LISTNAME is the name
of the list, USERNAME is your CSAIL username, PASSWORD is your password, SSN
is your social security number, and BANKROUNTINGNUBMER is your bank routing
number.
Lastly, replies, follow-ups, and flames to a message would, of course,
recursively create more lists, as each reply would undoubtedly have a new
message body.
To paraphrase Chris Stauffer, GSB sees no solution other than having
infinite lists.
As always, we invite you to discuss this and other mailing-list proposals at
this week's...
