It's really quite remarkable what people buy when they are on vacation.
If you've never been to a gift shop in a major tourist location you
really must go to one. After some recent perusing of such gift shops I
have developed the following product lines to help boost funding and
stock the Ray & Maria Stata gift shop:
1) T-shirts that say: "My intelligence is Artificial"
2) T-Shirts that say: "I lost my free lunch in Kiva"
3) Oval shaped stickers that say (GSB)
4) Miniature silver spoons with Cog on the top of the handle
5) Stacking Russian dolls painted as CSAIL faculty (ala:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Matryoshkas_Kiev.jpg)
6) Refrigerator magnets that read: "Hard drive encryption device"
7) Necklaces with pendents made from Concrete fragments from building 20.
8) Wooden stick figures that can walk down inclined planes branded as
"escapee's from the leg lab"
9) Mouse pads with pictures of actual Stata Center mice and the text:
"The mice that really control your computer."
10) Manger scenes in which all of the characters are played by CSAIL
faculty. A miniature Cog can lay swaddled in the manger.
In keeping with the gift shop theme today we are offering 2 GSB messages
for the usual price of 1 piece of email in your inbox...
While car camping my way across Utah this last week I saw many amazing,
wonderful and crazy things. In addition, the scenery was also quite
nice. One day pulling into, yes you guessed it, a gas station/gift shop
we saw the following poster in the entry way: "Hosts needed: Couples
wanted for June-July. Full hookups available." As anyone who has ever
read the Phoenix personals will attest, this may not be unusual by
Cambridge standards, but to post it in a tourist gift shop in Utah was
an all new surprise. Curious about other such volunteer/job
opportunities I did a quick Google search and found some of the
following offers:
1) There are 24 part-time Campground Host positions available from mid
May through mid September. Part-time Campground Host are provided
campsites with electrical hookups in their respective campgrounds.
Prairie Flower South host are provided a full-hookup site.
2) Campsite with electric hookup is available. Volunteer will receive
one night of camping for each four hours of service performed.
And my 2 personal favorites, due to their appealing locations:
3) A free campsite with full hookups will be provided at Whitebreast
Beach during the volunteer's work period.
4) All materials will be provided by the Corps of Engineers. A free
campsite with full hookup will be provided at Sugar Bottom Campground
during the volunteer's work period.
So come to tonight, to get your dose of tourist kitsch and maybe
volunteer for a job with full hookups available at tonight's, not so
special, but just as good as all the special editions of...
