One for the Birds

You know it's commencement time when MIT spends most of the landscaping
budget for the year all at once. Lots of new trees, flowers, and the like.

We had some cleanup work here too... let's face it we've got a wacky
building and it's got some wacky problems. I saw an architourist the
other day patting an ugly slanted cement column and saying "I really
like this." So what were they in a rush to fix for commencement?

  - The repetitive leak in the conference room? Nope.
  - Overzealous gardeners cutting down the water filtering plants
leaving us with really yellow toilet water? Nope.
  - Glass awnings over doors that drain water in front of the doors
instead of away from the doors? Nope.
  - Rebuilt-rebuilt amphitheater? Seems to be holding up okay at the moment.
  - Weeks and weeks of window washing? Check.
  - Birds crapping all over the building entrance ways? Check. We'll
call the "Bird Masters"! What a name! They must be good.

So, the bird thing didn't really get done for commencement. I'm not
really sure it's been all the effective either. The birds seem to find
other places to roost over the doors. Maybe the netting has kept them
out of some places, but it seems like they've figured out other places
to go. Could be that cutting down all the trees to dig a whole in the
ground didn't help.

And those birds certainly found somewhere else to go. Turns out, the
birds were attracted to the 3rd floor women's room and a glass jar with
a floral scent in it. It worked so well a pair of pigeons decided to fly
in and check it out. Fortunately the birds were scared back outside when
the door to the bathroom was opened. Unfortunately they knocked the
glass jar onto the floor, shattering the jar and spreading the scent all
over the place.

Maybe they'll figure out the birds eventually. The birds have bird
brains after all. Maybe for commencement next year. In the meantime come
celebrate the 4th of July a little early tonight...
