Well I'm out of debates so I can't write about those this week. The
election is now about 11 days away. Who knows what will happen. We do
know that we only have 87 days of Bush left.
I remember the 2000 election night pretty well. The night was pretty
much like the stock market is lately -- lots of ups and downs. After
seeing Florida called every possible way, I think we gave up around 3am.
Of course it would turn out to be a long drawn out affair and I'm sure
most of the country (and the world) probably wish it came out differently.
We were discussing this National Popular Vote Interstate Compact
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Popular_Vote_Interstate_Compact)
at GSB. I think the electoral college has it quirks, but it's worked
pretty well. If you want to change it go ahead and amend the
constitution. If you can't do that, then leave it alone. There's a good
reason why the constitution is hard to change. I think that encouraging
people to vote is a good thing. I also have big problems with combining
vote totals from different states -- especially if everyone plays by
different rules, I don't see how it's fair. I don't want my vote
affected by some elderly folks in Florida who mess up a ballot, or by
some person in the midwest whose goal is to keep people from voting
because their house was foreclosed on. What if the vote is so close you
need a recount? What about those really awful voting machines that you
can't audit?
