[csail-related] GSB Tonight: Love

I never understood why people put pictures of their loved ones on their
desks at work. I always thought it would serve as more of a distraction
than anything else. Well, I guess if I noticed everyone digging
pointless holes and claiming it was the most fun thing (since Portal 2
or) ever, I'd probably try it myself just to see what all the fuss was
about.

As you may have guessed by now, I now have such a picture. I put a
picture of my girlfriend and me on my desk about a week ago. It's a
picture she gave me [1] of us at a New Year's party [2]. "I love you
:)" is written at the bottom in a nice shade of italicized blue.

Well I don't know about some of the rest of you graduate students out
there reading this [3], but I came out to MIT all alone, thousands of
miles from friends and family to be a grad student. Of course since
then I've managed to make friends here and my girlfriend moved to NY,
but I'm still rather alone. Resultantly [4], I can get depressed from
time to time when sitting at my desk with nothing but my thesis proposal
looming over my head [5].

This happened to me just now. I was sitting here working, when I
suddenly realized that I was feeling a little down. I missed my family.
I missed my friends. I missed my girlfriend. I stared at my picture
and started to feel better immediately. There's just something about
loving and respecting someone so much, that knowing that they love and
respect you equally can't help but brighten your day. I now understand
why people put pictures of their loved ones on their desks. I just wish
I had put this picture here sooner [6].

Let's talk about meaningless sex, one-night stands, and legalizing
prostitution at this week's:

[3] Are there any? I wonder sometimes ...
[4] I looked it up and, despite what some people tell me, "resultantly"
is, indeed, a word.
