Here is what I have:

The "girl scout social" really started as a friday afternoon happy
hour on the 7th floor, probably around 1984 or so.  Beer was purchased
and people mostly just relaxed.  One of the secretaries from the
eighth floor was a girl scout troop leader and asked if she could
recycle the bottles and use the money for her troop.  We said fine, no
problem, and started calling the thing the "girl scout benefit".  It
kept that name even when the secretary left and the money stopped
going to the scouts.
