Carl,
I don't know if this is the sort of thing you're interested in,
but I was involved in setting up the first graduate student lunches
in the late '70s. At the time, I was serving on a committee that
was looking into redesigning the graduate program in CS. Joel Moses
suggested that it would be good to have more interaction among the
graduate students, so that they could talk informally with each other
about what they were doing and so forth. It seemed like a good idea,
and Joel was willing to provide some money to fund refreshments, so
we went ahead. Since I was the only grad student on the committee,
everyone else seemed to think that I was the logical person to make
it happen. I'm sorry that I don't have any of the old announcements,
but it's nice to hear that it's still going strong.
-Bill
