Once again, democracy rears its ugly heads. As represented by the persons of Al Gore and George W. Bush, democracy frightens me badly.
On the one hand, I'm a social liberal, a card-carrying member of the ACLU, so George W. scares the hell out of me -- especially given that the next president will almost certainly get to appoint 3 or 4 new Supreme Court justices. Plus, if I were to wander around MIT throwing rocks, the first 16-year-old freshman I hit would inevitably be smarter and better prepared to lead this country than the junior GB.
On the other hand, Al Gore is an embarassment to smart people everywhere. He's got the facts, he's got the figures, he's got the personal history, and yet he keeps making shit up just for the hell of it. And then, he keeps getting caught. Apparently he's clever, but not wise. I'm a little jittery about what'll happen the first time he gets caught fibbing at a nuclear arms reduction talk. Maybe we could vote for Al, but only on the condition that he's shot full of sodium pentothal (truth serum) before diplomatic appearances.
So once again it's all about choosing the lesser of two evils. Or, since your mind and mine are really already made up -- and those of you who are foreigners are simply shaking your heads in disbelief at this nightmare -- it's about milking the maximum possible amusement out of impending catastrophe.
And milking the maximum amusement is why, regardless of nationality, you should join us tonight for another round of Presidential Debate watching at this very special...
