"At this time of year the young grad student becomes restless in her office. With classes behind her and finals still a few days off, she pokes her head out momentarily to sniff the air. Frightened by the odor of impending finals yet enticed by the notions of fresh air, exercise, and a paying summer job, she sways in the doorway. She remembers suddenly that it's cold outside and she has a problem set to make up; with a sudden burst of decisiveness she vanishes back into her office faster than a groundhog that's just seen its shadow.
"A few offices down the hall, the 'mature' grad student stays firmly seated in front of his computer. He is deaf to the false call of the Massachusetts summer. He is unaffected by the end of classes. He is immune to the threat of finals. He has long since forgotten what it is to have -- or even want -- a life.
