To: all-ai Subject: GSB Friday, 23 Sep @ 5:00, 7th floor playroom [ATTN: NEW GRADUATE STUDENTS!] Reply-To: dmb@ai.mit.edu -------- If you are new here, you are probably wondering why you're getting an incomprehensible message about something called GSB each week. GSB stands for many different things, but they all ultimately refer to the beverage-oriented get-togethers on Fridays in the 7th floor playroom. In the immortal words of Jeanne Speckman (a deity in the GSB pantheon), "GSB is a chance to relax, wind down, take a break from whatever... Dress is informal, beer is provided and is $1.50 each [$1 if root beer] and the discussion is *not* limited to tech-ese (in fact prohibitions on "shop talk" have been suggested, but due to the anarchical nature of the proceedings these have never been instituted). Everyone is invited: students, faculty and staff." Tradition dictates that some group of the "Den Mothers" who oversee GSB administration send out a message about GSB each week; such messages are generally supposed to be at least one of the following: funny topical puzzling absurd satirical impressively interesting You'll notice that this message is none of these things. (But note that it would have been topical had it been sent at the *beginning* of the semester.) All GSB messages are now archived; you can read the best of these via the lab's Web page. One last note: the term "Girl Scout Benefit" is historical. (Find out the history by coming to GSB!) So come, join us at this week's G I R L S C O U T B E N E F I T to be held at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 23, 1994. Word has it that the Area II Committee is considering accepting GSB in lieu of certain core classes.
