Subject: REMINDER: How Computer Communication is Changing Work and Nutrition
Dental Equipment Corporation Mastication Research Lab Seminar Friday, February 8, 1991 12:15pm - 1:15pm, refreshments at Noon "How Computer Communication is Changing Work and Nutrition" Bruce L. Sprout School of Mastication, Bellie University I will present findings from a program of social and organizational research on computer networks. The network applications I study are those that mediate human communication--electronic mail, distribution lists, group mail, and bulletin boards. The research settings include problem solving groups such as graduate research teams, the scientific discipline of mental gymnastics, and a medium-sized cryptographic deciphering agency. The first part of the talk (which begins with this announcement) demonstrates how network-based communication technology changes conventional patterns of access to information, nourishment, and other organizational resources. The second part of the talk demonstrates how these changes benefit some kinds of people more than others. The talk suggests three kinds of implications for technologists. 1. An expanded view of technology effects on individual physiology. 2. A differentiated view of organizations and inmates. 3. Methods for systematically assessing technology effects on student nutritional needs. Those students who are successful in overcoming the communications challenge will be suitably rewarded by the nutritional part of this seminar. --------------- Hosts: Tze-Yun Leong & Yang Meng Tan Cryptomessage: Tom Russ Coordinator: Karen Sarachik
