All CSAIL students should know that this year, there is a Student Oxygen
Workshop every Friday. This is a huge improvement from previous years
where we only had one meeting per year. And today marks the second SOW
Session. It's just like the previous session last Friday, except it's
in G9 Lounge and it starts at 530pm and there's no lunch break and
there's no free food and you have to pay for drinks. Also the lobsters
are still alive, which is good, but they have escaped, which is bad.
This weeks sessions will focus on location aware computing:
Person Location:
Trying to find and plan informal meetings with people is important for
collaboration and productivity. After running our location aware
learning algorithms integrating multiple sources of location information
(your credit card trail, prox card, cell phone and bluetooth sniffing)
we have determined that the optimal algorithm is to go to Au Bon Pain at
4 o'clock and wait for the person to show up. Results indicate this
algorithm is effective 93.7% of the time with 96.2% of all members of
the CSAIL community.
Route finding:
Trying to find ones way from point A to point B (Especially in Bld 32)
is a complex and frustrating task. For this purpose we are currently
performing an experiment wherein each lost soul is given a robotic
guide. Looking to the architectural community for guidance we found the
sage word's of Frank Gehry who said "the building should be modifiable
by its occupants." In line with this insight each robotic guide will be
equipped with a 5 foot diameter drill bit, a grappling hook, and winch.
The robot will simply follow the straight line distance between two
points. COUHES has required that all participants in this experiment be
issued crash helmets and puffy inflatable suits.
Come next week for short talks on collaborative talk filtering and
cryptographically secure bike locks that can not only withstand a Bic
pen but even a Sharpie.
