Fresh young faces

As a new semester dawns, we welcome into our midst here at CSAIL a gaggle
of fresh-faced new graduate students. It is the hope of every good soul
that these young, happy faces will brighten the hordes of gray veteran
graduate students, bitter and disillusioned from their years of indentured
servitude.

Sadly, unbeknownst to these innocent new students, there are in CSAIL
terrors that boggle the mind of the unsuspecting: evil professors who
gnash their teeth at unbroken spirits, waiting to tear those virgin souls
asunder with clawlike fingers; labyrinthine corridors of the Stata center
that threaten to swallow graduate students whole, leaving no trace;
surly network administrators who wield godlike powers, destroying, at the
slightest provocation, all who stand in their way; and, of course, Richard
Stallman.

Thankfully, there is hope. As our new students navigate the storm of
graduate school, as they chart a path through the rocky shoals of MIT and
CSAIL that threaten to rent asunder their sense of self-worth and
efficiacy and leave them drifting without purpose or goal, let it be known
to them that there is a beacon: a beacon of hope and light and goodness.
A land of plenty, stocked with honey and nectar, where graduate students
can go to wash away their fears, to find companionship and friendship, to
clink glasses and toast those who have fallen before us, those who have
sacrificed themselves for the good of the many. This paradise, thanks be
to the Gods, occurs every week, rain or shine, and is called...GSB.

Please then, join us as we welcome these new graduate students into our
midst, comfort them, cheer them, and hopefully stave off their inevitable
psychological collapse for just a few more days at this week's...
