Today a number among us have failed in their calling as Gradual
Students. Due to circumstances beyond their control they have
accidentally typed hundreds of pages of scientific gobbledy-gook,
figures, tables, and test sets. With a large enough stapler and the
right paper stock it became a thesis. Now with their silly hats and
drab robes have completed a medieval ceremony involving being wrapped in
a mysteriously named piece of material known as a hood, and been thus
inducted into a secret society which only someone in a silly hat can
tell you about.
And now they must venture out, into a world where there is no free food.
Where there is no spring break. Where there is not even the hope of
working in nearly so "interesting" a building as we have here at CSAIL.
And with them we loose one more generation of lore and wisdom of the
bad old days in AI and LCS and good ol' NE43. Where GSB Fridges and
LISP machines could live in chilly harmony. Back in the days when NE43
offices commanded magnificent views of the beautiful courtyard, the roof
of the Polaroid building and through the light speckled leaves of trees
to the Whitehead institute. And of course, who could forget, the cozy
confines of the playrooms.
So to all of you that have strayed so far and now plan to face the evil
"Real World," you swore you would never enter, fare ye well, email often
and come to one more (hopefully not your last)...
