A DJ by any other name would smell as sweet

It is surely a matter of common knowledge that cultures across the world and
throughout time have developed various naming customs. Naming after birth
can be a part of a coming-of-age ceremony, part of an initiation as a full
member of the culture, and an important part of the formation of identity of
an adolescent and adult. A new name for a young man or woman can sometimes
be picked by the young adult, or given by the community or friends of the
participant; and in either case this name is something that represents,
defines, or structures the personality of a the person in question.

Perhaps the most obvious example of adolescent renaming in modern American
culture is the DJ name. When a young DJ matures from playing records end to
end, the DJ is given a new name, starting with "DJ" and symbolizing his or
her new status as someone who can smoothly transition from one song to
another. The trial of becoming a DJ is not an easy one. A perspective DJ
must first acquire expensive turntables, by purchasing, stealing, or
frequently inheriting from older DJs who have become too unfunky to spin
records anymore. With a name and turntables, the DJ's passage into adult
DJ-hood is not yet complete, he or she must book a gig and drop dope beats,
screaming breaks, and indelible groovitude onto an expectant crowd of peers
and tribal elders. Should the DJ be deemed unhip, unfunky, or unecclectic,
the DJ's coming of age is withheld, and he or she is forever barred from
spinning mad breaks and def scratches from here to the other side of the
galaxy, for the DJ community boogies in tune with the rhythm of the
universe. However, should the DJ emerge from a trial by beats victorious,
he or she dons his new name and is forever know to the world as...
