Welcome to 24th Grade



When I was in 3rd grade I remember asking my baby-sitter, "What grade are you in?" She said that she was in 10th grade. "Wow!!!" I said "You've been in school forever! How many grades are there?" She looked me in the eye and without even thinking about it told me there were 12. "Twelve! Wow! I don't want to be in school for 12 grades! That will take forever." Well, what I didn't know was that I would not only make it to 12th grade but I would go on to college and then grad school.

For those of you just showing up in the hallowed and incomprehensible halls, of CSAIL, I would like to skip forward to the present day and replay the above scenario...

Imagine me running into my first year self (in the, now defunct, NE43). "Welcome to 17th grade," I would say to my younger self. "17th grade! There are only 12!" I would retort. "Oh, you sorry little first year, that's only what they tell you when you are in 3rd grade so that you don't give up too early. There are many more than that," would be the response from my older and wiser self.

"Wow, what grade are you in then?" My brow would furrow and I would shuffle my feet some and say, "Well, lets, see, I would say, 24th." My wide eyed and bushy-tailed self would become wider eyed and frizzy tailed and say, "24th! My god! How many grades are there?"

To find out what I would say to myself, you'll just have to come to tonight's old school, new school, perpetual school, whatever as long as its still in school, edition of the...
