Alas the Silver Truck is no more

Today marks the end of an era. A long storied era of general gao, peanut tofu, fruit cups, the occasional somosa and the intermittent rice pudding. Back in mid August 1998 I had my first taste of the food truck delights from the silver truck and have been feasting upon the fruits of that truck ever since. And as of today, Hi Ho Silver is gone! Woe is me, it's gone.

I remember sitting on the front steps of NE43 that beautiful first day of grad school (the weather was beautiful anyway) and eating truck food with the older and wiser students while looking out on the Polaroid building and the beautiful tree filled courtyard that spanned over to, what is now 500 Tech Sq. (and hosts the MIT Institute for Soldier Nanotechnology) and being overjoyed at the prospects of a $3 meal that was tasty and not even that unhealthy. They tried to assure me that the novelty would wear off and I'd soon be despising that overladen styrofoam carton brimming with rice, cabbage, and shaved carrots. Mmmmm. But I showed them. I've stuck with the silver food truck through a food poisoning epidemic or two (not mine thankfully), the coming and going of the Grove, the short lived take out window at Polcari's and at least one new truck or paint job (at which point the silver truck became white...). I've probably dumped over $2000 into the silver truck over the years, and now, my beloved silver truck is gone. Gone! I can't believe it's gone. Replaced by a shiny new vehicle from goodness knows where. The general is gone, the peanut tofu is gone, and the happy go lucky incomprehensible lady behind the counter is gone. I'd order the thai chicken chili noodles and she'd say, "blah blah blah all sold out blah blah blah." Fair enough, I'm not sure what that was but apparently its gone. I'll have the tofu. "oh crap, I forgot my wallet," and she'd reply, "blah blah blah pay tomorrow blah blah blah." No problems. Today I ordered and had to go find an ATM before I got my vegetarian beef w/string beens (it was listed under vegetables). Ah the era is over and I morn it.

Just one more reason that I need to graduate. With a stronger stomach and years of fond memories of the silver truck, it's time to move on and join the hoards waiting in line at Goosebeary's. Come share stories of the silver truck and all it represented at tonights going away party for Hi Ho Silver at ...
