GSB on the Range

These days, computer geeks are appearing in surprisingly cool careers:
filmmakers, astronauts, baseball general managers, mayor of New York, etc.
This week, CSAIL hosted Dean Anderson, Research Animal Scientist with the
USDA, where he described directional virtual fencing, a "low stress, highly
flexible, autonomous method of controlling free-ranging animals."

This immediately revived my own dormant, boyhood fantasy: to be a cowboy!
Braving dust storms, snow storms, rattlesnakes, Indian attacks, me and my
fellow buckaroos would drive our 3,000 longhorns up the Chisholm Trail to
Dodge City. We'd blow all our meager wages on whiskey and poker, then saddle
up and do it again.

Now, I see how I could use computers to make my dream a reality. Just think
of the possibilities:

Roscoe, point driver: The Pecos is runnin' high this year, boss. How we gon'
get them dogies across?
Me: Send 'em in out of order. Make sure branch prediction is workin', so you
don't get any pipeline stalls.

Roscoe: What's that dust cloud up ahead?
Me (looking through spyglass): Them's the Chavez brothers. Meanest buncha'
cattle thieves this side of Waco. Set up the firewall and make sure these
cows all got their PGP key branded on 'em.

Roscoe: Thunderstorm comin' boss. If lightnin' strikes too near, these
heffers'll bolt like they seen the devil hisself.
Me: I'm loadin' up the particle swarm. We'll git 'em into a stable initial
configuration.

Come practice lassoing chairs, stringing up barbed wire, and shooting
bottles in the air at this week's
