[csail-related] GSB Tonight: Salt

I was reading a book as I am sometimes known to do. A war was going on,
and the defending army was retreating. They wanted to ensure that the
chasing army would have as hard a time as possible chasing them, so the
army burned the crops on their retreat and salted the earth. Hm ...
So salting is bad . . . for . . . farmland? Does that mean that no one
will be able to grow any food on this land forever and ever? I think
the logical conclusion is that all the salt trucks in the Boston area
are running away from an army. I guess it's working, because I haven't
seen any armies around here yet.
But where does all this salt come from? My best guess so far, is that
maybe if you're not quite bad enough for coal, Santa will give you
salt. At least you can sell it to the fleeing salt trucks and they can
spread it around during Winter. How lucky are we that for the past few
years the snow hasn't really hit hard until after Christmas? Imagine we
ran out of salt at some point, those armies might already be here.
Join me in my tower, safe from the armies pursuing the salt trucks, at
