[csail-related] GSB Tonight: Fractal Bike Locks

What's up with all the bike drama around CSAIL? I was pretty surprised
when I heard about this. I don't have a bike here, but I had one back
in the OC, when I went to UC Irvine. I had a good friend there, and I'd
generally find her bike on campus (we had very similar schedules) and
just chain my bike to hers. I wouldn't even use the rack; I just
chained my bike directly to hers. I was even sure to get it between the
spokes of her bike, so that she couldn't find any way to move it
conveniently.
We don't talk any more, though I heard she got married this month.
Another thing that happened this month, sad though it may be, is that
Beno?t Mandelbrot died of pancreatic cancer on the 14th. If you don't
know who that is, take a glance at his Wikipedia page:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beno?t_Mandelbrot If you don't want to go
to wikipedia, here's an excerpt from the section on Mandelbrot's death:
Reacting to news of his death, mathematician Heinz-Otto Peitgen said "if
we talk about impact inside mathematics, and applications in the
sciences, he is one of the most important figures of the last 50 years."
Apparently, he died here, in hospice (if you're not familiar with
"here", check out its Wikipedia page:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cambridge,_Massachusetts ) It's odd to
think that big events can happen geographically "right next to you"
without your noticing before reading it on the news several days later.
I didn't even know he lived in MA, let alone in Cambridge ...
But, where was I? Ah, yes: bike locks. Well, I don't have a bike any
more, but I do have a bike lock. When I'm bored or miss my friend, I go
around lab looking for David Karger's bike and ... well that's all I'm
willing to say about that in this public forum. We can talk more about
it at this week's:
