Fire escapes are meant to keep people safe -- safe from fires. They've
always seemed like a real vulnerability to me, though. I mean, couldn't
anyone just waltz right up and come in? [1] So what are fire escapes good
for? Well, escaping fires, I guess ...
Let's do some simple statistics [2]. How often do people get robbed?
Let's say 5% of the time [3]. How often do they die during a robbery?
Let's say about half the time [4]. And how often do they die in fires?
Like ... almost never -- 0.000005%!
Q.E.D. We should remove all fire escapes.
Let's talk about the nature of reality, and whether free will is an
illusion at this week's:
